Abstract

The central location of St. Louis; its railroad and river facilities of transportation; its business enterprise; its commercial importance; its industries; its wealth, all combine to insure its future growth and prosperity as one of the most important inland cities of America. But of still greater importance is its leadership in the trend of modern philosophic thought and the intellectual and spiritual progress of its people. Emerson tells of the shot for freedom and independence that was heard around the world. So in the following pages is reported that wonderful liberation of spirit and the progress and advancement of the "St. Louis Early Movement"-in philosophy, art, literature, psychology, and education, which was developed here about forty years ago, and which has had such a profound influence in St. Louis and throughout the west, and has spread to the eastern seaboard and become international in its scope. Briefly sketched here are the lives and works of the great men who originated and contributed to what is known as the "Early St. Louis Movement," notably, William Torrey Harris, Henry C. Brockmeyer, Denton J. Snider, Thomas Davidson, Adolph Kroeger, J. Gabriel Woerner and others. It is regretted that the interest and spirit of the occasion cannot be adequately reported. It will be interesting to study these men in their various tendencies, as the speakers have viewed them from different standpoints, thus affording us an unique and more general consideration of their work and influence. Abstract

"The noble Cavendishes were one of the most influential families in the politics and culture of early modern England and beyond. A Companion to the Cavendishes offers a comprehensive account of the Cavendish family's creative output and cultural significance in the seventeenth century. It discusses the writings of individuals including William and Margaret Cavendish, and William's daughters Jane and Elizabeth; family members' work and patronage in other media such as music, architecture, and the visual arts; their participation in contemporary developments in politics, philosophy, and horsemanship; and the networks in which they moved both in England and in continental Europe. It also covers the work of less well-known family members such as the poet and biographer George Cavendish and the composer Michael Cavendish. This volume combines path-breaking scholarship with discussion of existing research, making it an invaluable resource for all those interested in this fascinating and diverse group of men and women."--Publisher's website.

Abstract

This book pursues two meanings of the phrase, "sustaining New Orleans." One is the perpetuation of the images and ideas and tales of New Orleans sustained in public memory--local and not--through a range of activities and media, widely read literature notable among them. The other references the concept sustainability understood here to mean the struggle to balance the competing demands of social justice, environmental health, and economic growth. This book argues that these two definitions of sustaining New Orleans are mutually constitutive. It further argues that widely read literature set in the city, through its engagement with urban folkways that shape and reshape public memory, has participated, for good and ill, in the framing of the city's problems, the proposed solutions to those problems, and the perceived effectiveness of those solutions.

Abstract

Abstract

Fonthill, in Wiltshire, is traditionally associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house called Fonthill Abbey at the end of the eighteenth century. The collapse of the Abbey's tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man's excesses. Beckford's Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. 'Fonthill Recovered' draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I's Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords' wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.
